Yellowstone is the oldest and most famous of the US national parks. It was established in 1872 and covers an area of nearly 3000 square kilometers. The park, which spans parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, is best known for its geothermal features and wildlife.
So the big question on your mind is where should we stay in Yellowstone to have the best experience? I was in a similar position myself when I got my first pay in 1999 while working as an assistant to an accountant in Salt Lake City. Thankfully, I got to do plenty of research beforehand so my family could have an incredible time.
Exploring Yellowstone National Park through the lens of where to stay.
The world’s first national park, Yellowstone is one of the most popular destinations in the United States. There are many accommodation options in and around Yellowstone, but if you want to get a true feel for this incredible landscape, then staying within it is essential.

Yellowstone National Park is a sprawling wonderland of geysers, hot springs and wildlife. The park is home to more than 1,700 species of plants and animals, including some 600 birds that live there year-round. There are also an estimated 5,000 bison roaming the park’s grasslands.
Visitors can explore the park in a number of ways: by foot, horseback or car (though not during winter). Most people choose to stay overnight at one of Yellowstone’s many lodges or cabins. Lodging options vary from rustic cabins without electricity or plumbing to luxury hotels with gourmet dining rooms and golf courses.

For those who want to spend a few days exploring the park’s backcountry trails, there are campgrounds with tent sites; there are also backcountry campsites that must be reserved in advance. Each site has bear-resistant food storage lockers and picnic tables.
See the park by car
The Grand Loop Road is a scenic route that takes you around the perimeter of Yellowstone. You’ll see most of the major attractions (like Old Faithful and Mammoth Hot Springs) along this route.

If you want to take your time, it’d be best to start at Old Faithful and work your way counterclockwise around the loop. It’s about 240 miles long, so plan on spending several days driving it if traffic isn’t too bad!
It’s important to make sure that you have a vehicle with good ground clearance as some roads can get pretty rough; also make sure your tires are in good shape and that they’re appropriate for snowy weather conditions during winter months (November – March).
A 4×4 will definitely come in handy! It may also be helpful to get some maps before going so that way you know what places are ahead of you along the way; there are plenty available online but if none seem sufficient then just ask someone at one of those visitor centers like I did 🙂
